Prosthodontics
When our pets, usually dogs, chew on abnormal substances (cage bars, wood, rocks, balls) mechanical wear is the result. If this process occurs over time and does not invade the pulp, the tooth can lay down its own protective substance. However, the tooth can become more prone to fracture and the pulp may become exposed.
Below is a patient that has been chewing on the metal bars of his cage. The wear in the tooth is at the back of the upper canines. A 3⁄4 crown was placed to protect the tooth from fracturing and the pulp from becoming involved. Full coverage crowns can also be placed after a fracture to protect the tooth. Contact your veterinarian if you think crown restoration is appropriate for your pet.
