Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the study of the movement of teeth. Malocclusions result from abnormal jaw length or abnormal tooth position. Common malocclusions are overbite, underbite, linguoversion of the lower canines (where the canine teeth point towards the tongue), lance upper canines (the canines point forward like lances) and wry bite (mal-alignment down the midline). Treatment is necessary if the malocclusion interferes with the quality of life. The patient (below, left) not only had a short lower jaw but his lower canines were causing trauma to his hard palate. As a result he had difficulty eating.

Orthodontic treatment consisted of an inclined plane orthodontic appliance constructed out of composite that will provide ramps that guide the lower canines outward into proper occlusion each time he bites down. Consult with your veterinarian if orthodontics is an option for your pet.
